What is exercise?

After months of juggling an overloaded school schedule, a demanding internship, and an even more demanding graduate assistantship, I have only made it to the gym a handful of times a week, if that. Does it count that I walk to and from the MAX station, to and from work, and always take the stairs? If I say I'm going to wake up early and workout, I hit snooze. If I vow to workout at lunch, something happens that plants me in front of my computer. At night is out of the question.

I've been wondering if working out is only considered working out if done at the gym. My concept of working out was defined in the weight room and gym. Can I get away with going to the track, playing sports, and using free weights in the comfort of my own home and without the fee. More importantly, will I do it?

Fun in the Sun

Yesterday, Steve and I went wakeboarding with a family he met through work. I have not been out on the river in almost seven years and man was it fun! After seven years, I picked up right where I left off...unable to move toe side out of the wake (I'm sure that isn't the correct terminology). On my second run, I gave it a try fully aware of the ensuing face plant. Surprisingly, I moved with ease. I think I even caught a few inches of air, purely by accident of course.

It's also worth mentioning that Steve is a natural (at everything) and could probably go pro in two or three more trips out.

Vacation...Viva la Mexico!

The above photo was taken at Tulum, a Mayan ruin on the Caribbean.

Mexico...my motivation to exercise...happened after all. Swine flu, economy, warnings from the federal government were blissfully ignored so that I could go on vacation (and attend a beautiful wedding). I only checked my email once. I ate and drank whatever I wanted, though disappointed that dessert options were not more tempting. I had so much fun!

I'll give myself a week and then head back to the gym. I'm slightly overwhelmed by work, school, and internship at the moment. (Already making excuses...bummer.)

Renewed Motivation to Ameliorate Bad News

Mexico is a no go. It was the most horrible decision we've ever made, though it was the right decision for us. All the planning, working out, and anticipation has been replaced by disappointment, slight depression, and pangs of guilt.

There is a happy ending to this story, though totally unrelated. After helping an old friend with a volleyball practice, we decided to dust of the forearms and start playing again. As of today the training has started. We are playing in the Seaside Beach Volleyball Tournament, and there is no time to lose. Getting into beach shape is not a task for the faint hearted. We mean business: formal practices, workouts, and strategic planning.

Up go!
